Fever Energy co-founder and Chief Product Officer Jonatan Raber joined host Christophe Lephilibert on The Charge Point Podcast to discuss a shift that is easy to overlook: the most valuable thing on the grid is no longer just electricity. It is flexibility.

Flexibility is the ability to shift when and how customers consume, store or feed power back into the grid. And it is becoming more valuable by the year.

Europe’s energy system is moving away from predictable, centralised generation towards a mix dominated by wind and solar, which brings greater volatility. At the same time, electrification is driving demand up fast, from EVs, batteries and heat pumps to data centres.

It is tempting to treat this as a load-management problem. But it is also a significant opportunity. Many of the assets needed to provide flexibility already exist, in homes, charging sites and commercial buildings, and much of that potential is still untapped.

Key themes from the episode

Flexibility as a revenue stream. Unlike switching energy supplier, selling flexibility creates value that simply did not exist before. EVs, batteries and data centres can support grid stability and earn from it.

Data centres as grid assets. Facilities usually seen as a strain on the grid can help balance it instead, using backup capacity they already have.

Aggregation into virtual power plants. On their own, individual EVs and batteries are too small to trade. Fever Energy pools them so their flexibility can be sold to energy markets.

Automation is non-negotiable. Real-time optimisation is what makes flexibility pay. Nobody can bid thousands of assets into fast-moving markets by hand.

Getting started without disruption. Businesses can begin earning from flexibility without changing how their operations run day to day.

From paying for energy to being paid for flexibility

Jonatan’s view of where this is headed:

“People are going to start valuing their flexibility. The transition will be from paying for energy to paying, and being paid, for flexibility.”

For energy companies, that shift has a clear consequence. Customers will increasingly expect to be paid for the flexibility in their homes and buildings. The companies that launch that service first, under their own brand, keep the customer relationship and capture the value. Those that wait risk a third party getting there first.
